Vibration and Noise Control for a District Heating Pump

Presented by Shanghai Songjiang Shock Absorber Group Co., Ltd.
We are pleased to share a real-world case study of vibration and noise control for a district heating pump system. As a leading supplier of vibration isolation and noise reduction solutions, Songjiang Group has provided comprehensive support for numerous high-rise residential heating projects in northern China.

Background

District heating pumps are critical components in urban central heating systems. However, their operation can generate considerable noise and vibration, leading to environmental disturbances and resident complaints. The primary sources of noise in these systems include:

  • Pump and motor operation

  • Coupling mechanisms

  • Connected piping and valves

These components produce aerodynamic noise, mechanical noise, electromagnetic noise, and vibration-induced noise across high, medium, and low frequency ranges. The result is a broadband noise spectrum, which makes mitigation particularly challenging.

Noise Propagation & Challenges

Noise from heating pump systems is transmitted through several pathways:

  • Airborne transmission (via the air)

  • Structure-borne transmission (through the ground, walls, and building structure)

  • Pipeline and window reflections

Among these, structure-borne vibration is the most critical issue to address in effective noise control. Once transferred through building components, vibration can significantly amplify the perceived noise levels in residential spaces.

Songjiang’s Solution

In this project, our engineers conducted an on-site assessment and implemented the following measures:

  • Installed high-performance spring vibration isolators beneath the heating pump

  • Applied flexible connectors to decouple piping vibrations

  • Used rubber shock absorbers to isolate key contact points

  • Verified results through acoustic measurements and resident feedback

The result was a significant reduction in vibration transmission and a measurable drop in ambient noise levels in surrounding apartments.

Conclusion
Vibration and noise from heating pump systems pose a complex challenge due to their multi-frequency, multi-source nature. Shanghai Songjiang offers tailor-made, effective vibration isolation solutions that ensure comfort in high-rise residential buildings.
